Flax Meal & Alpaca Nutritional Products
For the last several years Bluebird Hills Farm has been offering a number of specific products to fellow alpaca owners in our area. Our reasons for doing so are basically self-centered for we wanted to get the best products for our animals for the least cost. Buying in larger quantities reduces cost and freight, and so began our adventure selling alpaca nutritional products back in 2003. We do not have shop hours, but instead operate on the honor system so that folks can come 7 days a week during daylight hours. Just give us a call the first time you come so that we can show you the ropes, and from then on, come when it's convenient to you!

Flax Meal
Alpaca Owners are just discovering what the horse industry has known for years...that flax can add luster and brightness to the fleece! But it can do so much more!
Bluebird Hills has been selling flax meal for several years locally, and is very excited to now offer it to farms across the continental United States!
Flax is wonderful for skin and coat. It can improve the luster in suris and the brightness in huacayas. It may also improve any skin “issues” you may be having with your alpacas.
Our Flax Meal is available in 25 and 50 pound bags with FREE SHIPPING to anywhere in the continental United States included in our extremely reasonable price.
The flax meal we sell is simply top dressed onto your alpacas’ feed at a rate of 1 ounce (about 1/2 cup) per alpaca so that a 25 pound bag fed to 4 alpacas will last over 3 months!
This is 100% Flax Meal with nothing added or taken away. We even eat the same meal ourselves, even though it is designated for animals consumption only. The benefits of flax meal are now the subject of much human research as well... and it's all fantastic!
Our flax meal is cold milled so that it retains its freshness and will last at least 20 months if it is stored at dry ambient temperatures between 0 degrees F and 95 degrees F in a sealed container, however as with all feeds we recommend using the product within 6 months of receiving it, even though it is guaranteed to last so much longer if stored properly.
THIS IS 100% FULL FAT FLAX MEAL WITH NOTHING ADDED AND NOTHING REMOVED, SO YOUR ANIMALS GET 100% OF THE BENEFITS OF FLAX.

We sell 25lb bags of flax meal at our farm and also offer free shipping of this product in both 25lb and 50 lb bags. Below are the specifications for the flax meal, which is cold milled in a facility that is certified organic as well as Pareve (Kosher). Cold Milling provides the flax meal with a shelf life of 20 months when other flax meal products have gone rancid. The secret method by which this flax meal is processed enables it to last longer without that fear.
Flax meal is known to be an effective additive to livestock feeds, and now is being used in high end dog foods. In humans the Omega Fats in Flax Meal have their own benefits and the hull of the seed is made of lignans that have been proven to lower cholesterol. Some alpaca breeders already use products with flax meal to enhance fiber growth and the health of the fleece, if you are one of these, we recommend that you not add any additional flax meal.

Custom Milling Alpaca Feed Golden Blend:
We offer and use a feed made and sold by Custom Milling, a mill located in Georgia. After doing a great deal of research, we began to make arrangements to have this feed shipped from their mill, even though shipping is such a large portion of the price per bag. This is a fixed formula feed, which means that one batch is identical to the last because they utilize the same ratio of the same ingredients each time they make the feed. Many feeds are mixed on a least cost formula basis which means that they use the cheapest ingredients to come up with the right nutritional content.
Another advantage to Custom Milling feed is that it is made just a few days before we receive it, making it extremely fresh. We purchase 1 to 2 months of feed at a time so that the vitamins and nutrients are at optimal levels. Feed stored longer than this deteriorates in nutritional value. Their mill has no substances on site that are harmful to alpacas such as antibiotics that are used in other feeds to prevent disease in animals such as chickens or pigs. This feed is pelleted and the use of this feed has reduced the incidence of choke on our farm to a rarity, when we used to experience it all of the time using other feed. Choke is a condition where food actually blocks the esophagus. It has been associated with pelleted feed, crumbled feed, and feed that is made with fillers in it. Our personal experience is what drives us to use the pelleted and nutritious feed from Custom Milling.
As a service to breeders in our area, and to reduce our cost for shipping, we simply provide this feed to fellow breeders at our cost, which makes it less expensive than other alpaca feed offered in our area. If you are interested in trying the Custom Milling Alpaca feed, you can give us a call. We offer the feed on an honor system billing you for whatever you take. We also have the Custom Milling minerals on hand which the alpacas certainly relish. The current price for the feed is $17.50 per 50lb. bag and $30.00 for a 20lb. bag of the minerals.

Golden Blend Chelated Alpaca Minerals With Probiotics:
We also offer Custom Milling Minerals in 20 pound bags for $30.00. For several years we offered minerals to our alpacas that they would not consume. They may have been perfectly designed for alpacas, but they won't benefit an alpaca if the alpaca won't eat them. More were being thrown out than consumed. The Custom Milling minerals evidently are very palatable based on our results here at the farm. If your alpacas are eating the Custom Milling feed, they won't eat as many of the minerals, while those animals on pasture and hay alone will consume more.
This is what Golden Blend says about their minerals:
"Golden Blend Chelated Alpaca Minerals are very palatable. We have known for years what the universities and leading veterinarians are just learning. It doesn't matter how good your minerals are, if your animals don't eat them, they won't work. We have added a natural sweetener to our minerals. You can smell the sweet aroma when you open the bag. If your Alpacas or Llamas don't like minerals, try these. You can feed the minerals free choice or you can top dress the feed. You don't need to add anything else."
"Each vitamin and mineral has been balanced with its counterpart. Selenium plays a major role in the normal development of the fetus during pregnancy and vitality of the newborn. Vitamine E is an antioxidant and is enhanced by selenium. You will find selenium in high levels balanced with Vitamine E to help protect against "white muscle disease".
"Zinc is necessary for the mobilization of Vitamin A. We have added a highly available source of organic zinc to help improve skin condition and promote high quality fiber. If your formula is not balanced the vitamins and minerals can be locked out".
Custom Milling also added probiotics to help support the disgestive system and keep it healthy. Aging causes many problems in older animals. They absorb less and less nutrients as they age. This is one reason why the probiotics have such a dramatic effect on older animals. Probiotics enable them to utilize more of the nutrients in their feed, pasture and hay.
Research shows that the benefits of supplementing with vitamins and chelated minerals are:
• Animals are healtheir and have a better conception rate
• Young crias grow at a faster rate
• The chances of having birthing problems are reduced

FIBRevive:
This new product was developed by Oxbow Nutrition to help provide nutrition for alpacas and llamas that are in a compromised state. It is a combination of feed, minerals, vitamins, and probiotics.
This product comes in powder form with a wonderful fragrance. It can be placed in the feed bowl or administered as a paste when reconstituted with water. I use this in place of probiotic pastes for it is easier to administer since I can thin it to a consistency that allows easy passage through a paste syringe. The greatest feature is that the alpacas seem to like it, or at least they don't spit it back out.
For the animal that is down, it can be used to provide nutrition to insure that the rumen stays active and the alpaca still has some sort of nutrition on board. With is longer shelf life and multiple uses, it seems a nobrainer to have this stuff on hand just in case. It comes in 7 pound tubs and we sell it for $35 per tub, but unless you are close by, it would probably be easier to order directly from Oxbow, or Custom Milling
